I've run across a very informative graphic to explain how Revit is set up at the most basic level. I've polished things up a bit and here you are:

I hope you find it as interesting as I did. I mean, I sort of knew this, but trying to explain the differences to other people was always a bit difficult. Until now. :)

    I know this post is quite old, but it I had to comment. In my opinion the chart is wrong, views are not Building Elements. Building Elements in Revit are things that are placed within the model. Views are not placed in this sense. Views facilitate the observation of the building elements, whether that be a schedule or a section. The person who made this has misinterpreted the 2010 Autodesk Guide. Also, Datum elements are not Annotation. This Autodesk one is far better in my opinion.
